Tennis Tips – Wimbledon Day 3 Tips

It was a clinical start to the tournament for Coco Gauff who has firmed as one of the favourites for the tournament – what can we expect in the second round? See our outright Wimbledon betting previews here.

Best Bet

Under 18.5
Total Games - Anca Todoni vs Coco Gauff

When the top-seeds are crushing little-known opposition including Coco Gauff in her first-round win over Dolehide, this total games line appears too high.

From the first-round 67% of matches went unders in the women’s draw, including 73% of matches where players won with a game handicap of -2.5 or longer.

Gauff ain’t losing to the 19-year-old Romanian qualifier in this, and after her last match going to 15 games I’m happy to play the under 18.5 in this.

Next Best

Fabio Fognini +6.5
Line - Fabio Fognini vs Casper Ruud

I just cannot take Casper Ruud at this game handicap on grass. Thought the Norwegian was underwhelming against Alex Bolt, considering the Australian’s ranked 234 in the world and limped through qualifying.

Bolt had plenty of opportunities especially in the first set, and I don’t think the experience of Fabio Fognini will let Ruud get away with it.

The Italian was clinical in his first-round win and is more suited to grass than the Norwegian. Unfortunately you never know what Fognini’s mind-set will be, but if he starts strong I expect him to cover this game handicap and wouldn’t be surprised to see him cause an upset at $5.10.

Stan Wawrinka +4.5
Line - Stan Wawrinka vs Gael Monfils

Gael Monfils got the win over Mannarino in the first-round but failed to cover the game handicap against his out of sorts countryman.

Now against Stan who enters this off a straight sets win, the Monfils line is even greater at -4.5 and it’s just too big.

Wawrinka may run out of puff as the match wears on, but I expect the Swiss to challenge Monfils in the first couple of sets at least winning one of those. If he does that, he’s a big chance of covering against the Frenchman who has struggled in the second-round of majors for a couple of years now.

Over 39.5
Total Games - Zhizhen Zhang vs Jan-Lennard Struff

I’ll continue to take the Jan-Lennard games over as far as he goes this tournament. Saluted as our best bet on Day 1, and up against another tough opponent in Zhizhen Zhang we can expect this to go to either four or five sets.

Struff’s last four matches at Wimbledon against top-50 opposition has gone over 39.5 games, while his Chinese opponent has won a set in six of his seven matches at majors against top-50 opponents.

The German’s serve should be too strong here, but don’t be surprised to see some tiebreakers in a match that could go the distance.

Clara Burel +1.5
Line - Sonay Kartel vs Clara Burel

I know the Frenchwoman has been out of sorts in 2024 with a 15-17 record, but her best is quite good and I’m surprised to see her underdog in this.

Burel’s opponent is 22-year-old Brit Sonay Kartal, ranked 298 in the world and winning her first-round against Sorana Cirstea. Despite Cirstea’s seeding of 29 this tournament, she’s been terrible this year and was 3-7 from her last ten matches leading into Wimbledon along with major collapses at both the French and Australian Open.

Burel was convincing in her first-round win over the dangerous Lys, and although she went winless in the grass-court lead-up the form of Siniakova, Putintseva and Saville doesn’t look so bad after the first-round here. Should win as underdog in this.

Value Bet

Emma Navarro
Match - Naomi Osaka vs Emma Navarro

The American has just been getting it done. Navarro is 37-15 on the year and enters this off the back of reaching the Semis at Bad Homburg.

It won’t be a walk in the park against Naomi Osaka, but I think the Japanese will give Navarro plenty of opportunities to take momentum in this contest.

Osaka made hard work of her first-round against Parry and has never been great at Wimbledon historically. Think Navarro can cause an upset at $2.20.
