Star Smash would have won by a lot bigger margin at Casterton last time had he not wanted to run around after hitting the front a long way from home. The gelding has shown a bit right the way through and clearly appreciated getting out to a longer trip last time. From barrier one, Mel Julius should give him the run of the race.

Boadicea ran a much improved race last time at Mildura and should prove hard to beat here. The mare had little luck there but once she finally gained clear running, knuckled down well to hit the line hard, finishing second. Dean Holland will need to get across from the wide draw but she looks to have nice upside.

Steven Vella has come to Casterton for one ride on Tuesday and it is no surprise he is keen to be with this horse who won so well at this track back in September. Not much went right at Horsham last time and I expect him to sit a lot closer in the run this time. With the right run he can win.

Mahrez is having his first start for new trainer Lindsey Smith and while overall he has been a little disappointing, he has the talent to win this race on his ear if he brings anything like his best form. Interestingly Smith has not given him a jumpout, so the betting will be interesting, but on ability alone he is worth the gamble. A firm surface will definitely help.
