Imported galloper Cleveland shapes as the one to beat in this year’s Newcastle Cup. Formerly with Aidan O’Brien, he joined local trainer Kris Lees for this campaign and showed with an excellent first up run at Randwick that he has come up well. Talent wise, this horse was second favourite for last year’s Melbourne Cup before injury. Expect him to get back in the run but he can get over them late.

Alvina’s Luck looks hard to beat third up and out in trip. Both career runs have been good, firstly a debut second at Hawkesbury before a fast finishing fourth in a race that was dominated from the front. Out in trip and from a more favourable barrier, expect her to sit a little closer in the run and that can make all the difference.

Superstitious made a pleasing debut at Wyong and is capable of going better here. The Snitzel colt was slow away and had no early speed, then was forced extremely wide on the turn, but ran on well late to get beaten less than two lengths. He should only be improved for that run and if he can show a little more tactical speed, can be right in the finish at big odds.

Keen to be on both of these at double figure odds in this year’s Cameron Handicap. Both should be right on speed in a race without a lot of obvious pace in it and in which a lot of key runners in the market will get back. They finished close together at Rosehill last time and expect the same again. Both are double figure odds.
