Jumps Tips – Friday Best Bets for Terang

Jumps racing is back and better than ever in 2023! The season kicks off with four races at Terang in the heartland of jumps racing, Victoria’s Western District.

The track will be significantly watered but expect it to be on the firm side for jumping, and it’s no surprise than a lot of the entrants do prefer firm going.

Race 1 – Decron Hurdle, 3200m

Open race with a few winning chances, Mighty Oasis, Sky Hero and San Remo being the best of them. Going with the latter here at a nice price. Loved his most recent hurdle trial – he jumped beautifully – and he’s a horse that won’t be bothered by a firmer track.

Strategy: Back San Remo.

3. San Remo
Terang R1 (12:30pm)

Race 2 – Laurie Kenna Memorial Maiden Hurdle, 3200m

Probably the toughest race of the day. Cotton Eye Joe, Heroic Fighter and Laybuy could all win. Nevertheless, Cotton Eye Joe is the value. Again, comes in off an excellent recent trial and Symon Wilde is a terrific trainer of jumpers. I’m not convinced Heroic Fighter stays, although he will enjoy the firm going.

Strategy: Back Cotton Eye Joe.

2. Cotton Eye Joe
Terang R2 (1:10pm)

Race 3 – Maiden Hurdle, 3200m

Keen on the chances of Goondiwindi and he is a most attractive price. The gelding comes here first up but he is to be ridden by his trainer Steve Pateman and I expect him to be fully ready to go. His most recent hurdle trial was – despite finishing last – excellent. The only danger is Epizeel. If one of those two doesn’t win I’d be amazed.

Strategy: Back Goondiwindi and save on Epizeel.

5. Goondiwindi
Terang R3 (1:50pm)

Race 4 – Bill Roycroft Steeplechase, 3200m

The market accurately has this as a race between Count Zero and Flying Pierro but Count Zero is the clear top pick. He shaped as being a very exciting prospect last season but he doesn’t handle the super heavy ground which saw his form train off. Expect him to be primed and ready to go.

Strategy: Back Count Zero.

3. Count Zero
Terang R4 (2:30pm)
