The Giants and Hawks have just two wins combined to start 2023 so both will be desperate to get back on the winner’s list at Norwood Oval.
Best Bet
There’s not a lot of faith in the Giants but Hawthorn look clearly the competition’s worst side and are unlikely to cover here.
Hawthorn’s sole win was against a North Melbourne team missing Davies-Uniacke, Simpkin and McKay and they’ve lost their other three matches by an average of 74 points. They’re also dead last for a long list of key stats, including inside 50 differential, pressure, marks inside 50 conceded, centre clearances and total clearances. Sam Mitchell will be without Will Day this week who, along with James Sicily, has probably been their best player this season.
GWS have only one win Adam Kingsley’s first month in charge but they have been competitive in each game and their win over Adelaide in Round 1 is looking for more impressive by the week. They’re hardly a mature side but they’ll have seven 150+ gamers to Hawthorn’s three on the park. Their midfield core of Stephen Coniglio, Josh Kelly and Tom Green have had a very solid start to the season, as have Toby Greene and Jesse Hogan. The Giants should enjoy a big advantage around the pill.
The Hawks have failed to cover the spread in five of their last six matches and it’s hard to see them improving that number here.
Same Game Multi
Jesse Hogan has had an impressive start to 2023 and should get plenty of supply here. He’s kicked 2+ in six of his last seven.
James Sicily has recorded 25+ touches in six of his last seven games while Lachie Ash has had 20+ touches in each outing this year.
Value Bet
Hawthorn have already been smashed three times this year and GWS have kicked 100+ points twice so they’re capable of piling on the goals. Another big loss for the young Hawks is absolutely possible here.
