What is the Brownlow Medal?
The Brownlow Medal is an individual award presented annually to the best and fairest player in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the home-and-away season.
The award is named after Charles Brownlow, a former Geelong Football Club player and administrator who devised the concept in 1924.
During the season, umpires award votes to the players they consider to be the best on the ground in each game, three votes to the player they believe is the best player on the field, then two votes and one vote to the next two best performed players.
At the end of the season, the player with the most votes is awarded the Brownlow Medal.
Any player suspended for one match or more by the AFL Tribunal throughout the season is ruled ineligible for the award. This has occurred twice, in 1996, Corey McKernan received an equal number of votes to James Hird and Michael Voss and 1997 when Chris Grant received the most votes. Neither player received the Brownlow Medal.
The award is considered to be one of the most prestigious individual awards in the AFL and is highly coveted by players.
